Bibliothécaire et membre de la Royal Society de Londres, écrivain scientifique, né en 1717, mort en 1791, fils d'Abraham Mendez da Costa, venu de Normandie s'établir en Angleterre vers 1696 et marié en 1702 à sa cousine Esther da Costa. Botaniste, naturaliste et collectionneur réputé, il est admis à l'Aurelian Society en 1739, à la Gentleman's Society de Spalding en 1746, puis élu membre de la Royal Society le 26 novembre 1747, dont il devient ensuite le bibliothécaire. Auteur d'Elements of Conchology (1776) et de British Conchology (1778), c'est dans sa bibliothèque que fut retrouvée la liste des premiers colons juifs d'Angleterre.
