Philanthrope, né en 1704, mort en Angleterre en 1764, issu d'une des plus anciennes et honorables familles juives portugaises et compté parmi les premiers marchands hébreux de son temps. Il distribuait chaque année trois mille livres aux pauvres de toutes confessions, et dota en 1762, avec Isaac de David Levy, une yeshiva à laquelle il assurait des distributions annuelles aux étudiants ; un codicil à son testament prolongea ses largesses au bénéfice des familles indigentes qu'il avait soutenues de son vivant.
