Sa position à la cour tient à l'influence de son frère Antonio Mendes, qui avait guéri la reine d'un érysipèle au Portugal ; celle-ci persuada les deux frères de l'accompagner en Angleterre, où ils se déclarèrent ouvertement juifs.
