Évêque de Natal et bibliste anglais, né à St Austell, en Cornouailles, le 24 janvier 1814, mort le 20 janvier 1883. Formé à Cambridge, il devient évêque de Natal en 1853, où il apprend le zoulou, en rédige une grammaire et traduit la Genèse, l'Exode et Samuel. Les questions de ses interprètes zoulous sur les incohérences du récit biblique le conduisent à publier dès 1862 son Pentateuch and Book of Joshua Critically Examined, qui met en doute la paternité mosaïque du Pentateuque ; déposé pour hérésie par l'évêque du Cap en 1863, il reste néanmoins évêque de Natal jusqu'à sa mort, achevant l'ouvrage en 1879.
