Physiologiste allemand, né à Schneidemühl, dans la province de Posen, le 23 avril 1862. Formé au Kneiphöfsche Gymnasium puis à l'université de Königsberg, où il obtient son doctorat de médecine en 1886, il devient la même année assistant au laboratoire de chimie médicale et de pharmacologie, puis privat-docent en 1892 et professeur en 1898. Depuis 1893, il dirige la rubrique de chimie des Jahresberichte für Physiologie de Hermann.
