Historien allemand, né à Breslau le 22 mai 1834, mort à Göttingen le 13 janvier 1871, issu d'une famille de marchands. Handicapé physique depuis l'enfance, il entre à l'université de Breslau en 1851 puis à celle de Berlin en 1853, avant d'obtenir son doctorat à Breslau en 1856 ; converti au christianisme, il devient privat-docent à l'université de Göttingen en 1857, où il enseigne jusqu'à sa mort. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages d'histoire, dont Der 30jährige Krieg (Halle, 1861) et Geschichte Kaiser Heinrich II. (Halle, 1867).
