Économiste allemand, né le 12 septembre 1840 à Marienwerder, en Prusse-Occidentale. Formé aux universités de Berlin et de Iéna, il devient privat-docent à Heidelberg en 1869 puis professeur au Polytechnikum de Riga la même année, avant d'occuper de 1875 à 1884 la chaire d'économie de l'École polytechnique fédérale de Zurich, puis de rejoindre l'université de Göttingen. Il y publie en 1885 le premier volume de son ouvrage majeur, le System der Nationalökonomie, salué par les économistes Wagner et Schmoller, et devient en 1894 membre de la Société des sciences de Göttingen.
