Juriste allemand, né le 19 septembre 1845 à Breslau. Professeur honoraire de droit civil et commercial allemand à l'université de Heidelberg en 1888, il collabore au Handbuch des Handels-, See- und Wechselrechts d'Endemann (1881-85) et fonde en 1877 la Zeitschrift für Vergleichende Rechtswissenschaft, qu'il dirige depuis. Professeur à l'université de Zurich, il est l'auteur de nombreux travaux de droit comparé, dont Die Justizverweigerung im Altdeutschen Rechte (Karlsruhe, 1876).
