Philanthrope et érudit français, né à Presbourg, en Hongrie, le 14 septembre 1814, mort à Paris le 15 mars 1877, issu d'une famille alsacienne installée en Hongrie au XVIIIe siècle. Formé à Vienne de 1824 à 1836, où il obtient un doctorat de philosophie en 1834, il s'installe à Paris en 1836 et devient en 1839 l'administrateur des œuvres charitables de la famille Rothschild, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'à sa mort. Il se rend en Algérie en 1845, 1847 puis 1860 pour défendre les communautés juives persécutées, et visite Jérusalem à cinq reprises entre 1854 et 1869 pour le compte du Consistoire central des israélites de France.
