Philologue américain, né à Paris le 29 mai 1851. Bachelier ès lettres de l'université de Paris en 1868, il obtient sa licence en droit en 1873 puis son diplôme d'archiviste paléographe en 1874, après avoir servi dans l'armée française pendant la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870. Installé à New York en 1875, correspondant de La République Française de Gambetta de 1876 à 1884, il enseigne le français à Columbia à partir de 1882 puis à Harvard de 1884 à 1891, avant de devenir en 1891 professeur de langues romanes à Columbia University ; fait chevalier de la Couronne d'Italie en 1897 et de la Légion d'honneur française en 1900.
