Talmudiste français, mort en mai 1806 à Metz, sa ville natale, à un âge avancé, fils d'un membre du collège rabbinique de la ville. Rabbin adjoint auprès d'Aryeh Löb b. Asher Günzburg, il lui succède comme adjoint à sa mort en 1785 puis devient grand rabbin en 1793, tout en saluant avec joie, malgré son attachement à l'ancienne école, le succès de la Révolution française en 1792. Il est l'auteur du Halakah Berurah, essais casuistiques sur des passages halakhiques et aggadiques du Talmud, publié à Metz en 1793 par son fils David Cohen, rabbin de Verdun.
