Minéralogiste allemand, né à Aakjær, près de Horsens, dans le Jutland, le 12 octobre 1842. Formé aux universités de Heidelberg et de Berlin, il est assistant à l'institut minéralogique de 1867 à 1869, puis privat-docent à partir de 1871, avant d'entreprendre un voyage d'étude géologique et minéralogique en Afrique du Sud, où il visite les mines de diamants de la rivière Vaal et le district de Lydenburg. Nommé professeur assistant de pétrographie à Strasbourg en 1878, il devient ensuite professeur à Greifswald, et publie de nombreux ouvrages scientifiques ainsi que plus d'une centaine d'articles.
