Pionnier de Krugersdorp, dans la colonie du Transvaal, né vers 1860. Émigré en Afrique du Sud en 1881, il se lie aux Boers dont il apprend la langue, puis, en route vers Johannesburg en 1887, plante sa tente sur le site qui devient la ville de Krugersdorp, dont il est ainsi le premier colon anglais. Bien qu'étranger au complot contre le gouvernement boer de 1895, il est emprisonné pour des propos indiscrets, et obtient plus tard, comme président de la congrégation de Krugersdorp, deux terrains du président Kruger pour la communauté juive.
