Enfant juif de Rome, né en 1854, enlevé en 1864 alors qu'il livrait une paire de chaussures chez un prêtre et conduit de force à la Casa dei Neofiti pour y être baptisé, malgré les protestations de son père et de la communauté juive. Le pape Pie IX le fit baptiser le 29 septembre 1864 en la chapelle Saint-Stanislas, sous le nom de Stanislas Maria Michael Joseph Pius Eugenio. Il ne fut rendu à sa mère qu'en 1870, à la chute du gouvernement pontifical, après sept années de détention.
