Médecin ordinaire à la cour du prince Vassile Lupu, hospodar de Moldavie de 1634 à 1654 ; ses dates de naissance et de décès, ainsi que son prénom, restent inconnus. Selon E. Schwarzfeld, il descendrait d'Eliezer Cohen de Safed, établi en Pologne. Il jouissait d'un grand crédit auprès du sultan de Turquie, qui lui confia des documents secrets sur une alliance entre la Suède et la Russie dirigée contre la Turquie, et le gouvernement de Venise sollicitait ses conseils diplomatiques.
