Hetman des cosaques zaporogues, né vers 1595 et mort à Tchyhyryn en 1675. La spoliation de son domaine de Soubotiv par le baillif polonais Chaplinski nourrit son ressentiment contre les Polonais et les juifs, mais c'est surtout son ambition de gouverner une Ukraine libérée qui le poussa à soulever le peuple contre eux. Faisant des juifs les intermédiaires de son administration auprès des paysans, il concentra sur eux la haine accumulée, et les cosaques massacrèrent environ trois cent mille juifs en 1648-1649, désastre que l'insurrection cosaque de 1637 aurait déjà dû faire pressentir.
