Fils de David, né à Hébron d'Abigaïl, que David épousa après la mort de son mari Nabal le Carmélite. Le récit parallèle des Chroniques donne son nom sous la forme « Daniel », et le Talmud propose une interprétation midrashique du nom « Chileab », qu'il rattache au fait qu'il aurait fait honte à Mephibosheth en matière de Loi.
