Disciple le plus éminent du Gaon de Vilna, il fonde en 1803 la yeshiva Etz Chaïm de Volozhin, matrice du monde des yeshivot lituaniennes, restée ouverte près de 90 ans (jusqu'en 1892). Sa méthode d'étude analytique perpétue celle du Gaon. Il est mort en 1821.
