Directeur de théâtre allemand, né en 1782 et mort à Berlin en 1845. Converti très jeune au christianisme, il dut à dix-sept ans subvenir aux besoins de la famille de son père, puis, après avoir pratiqué le commerce de chevaux à Dessau, s'éleva au rang d'agent militaire en chef et prit part, à partir de 1813, à la campagne sous les ordres du comte Wittgenstein, général russe, dont le courage lui valut la faveur de l'empereur Alexandre. Établi ensuite à Berlin, il obtint de Frédéric-Guillaume III une concession perpétuelle pour l'édification du Königsstädtisches Theater, consacré à la comédie française et à l'opéra italien, qu'il dirigea jusqu'à sa mort.
