Impératrice de Russie, née à Stettin en 1729 et morte à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1796, épouse et successeure de Pierre III, dont elle usurpa le trône en 1762. Bien que d'inclination libérale, elle ne put, portée au pouvoir par le parti orthodoxe le plus strict, ratifier ouvertement la libre admission des juifs en Russie et les exclut ainsi de l'édit du 15 décembre 1762 autorisant les étrangers à s'y établir. Son attitude plus favorable se lit néanmoins dans une lettre du 11 mai 1764 au gouverneur-général de Riga, concernant des marchands étrangers, dont plusieurs juifs, placés depuis 1763 sous la protection d'un bureau institué à cet effet.
