Biochimiste né à Varsovie dans une famille juive polonaise intellectuelle (père Jakub Funk, dermatologue). Il forgea le terme « vitamine » en 1912 après ses travaux au Lister Institute de Londres sur le béribéri. Doctorat à l'université de Berne (1904) ; mort à Albany (État de New York) en 1967.
