Biochemist born in Warsaw into an intellectual Polish Jewish family (father Jakub Funk, dermatologist). He coined the term « vitamin » in 1912 following his work at the Lister Institute in London on beriberi. PhD from the University of Bern (1904); died in Albany (New York State) in 1967.
