Chargé de cours d'histoire à l'université de Zurich, né en 1867 à Glogau, en Prusse. Après des études dans plusieurs universités allemandes couronnées par un doctorat à Strasbourg en 1891, et un séjour en Italie, notamment à Gênes, il devint privat-docent à Zurich en 1896. Ses travaux portent sur l'histoire de l'Italie du Nord au Moyen Âge, en particulier sur la République de Gênes, notamment dans Genua und die Mächte am Mittelmeer, paru à partir de 1895.
