Rabbin et historien allemand, né en 1844 près de Posen, fils de l'exégète et prédicateur Joseph Ḥayyim Caro, rabbin de Wloclawek. Après des études à Bromberg, au séminaire théologique juif et à l'université de Breslau, puis un doctorat à Heidelberg, il fut prédicateur à Lodz puis à Mewe, avant de devenir rabbin à Dirschau à partir de 1870, à Erfurt à partir de 1879, à Pilsen à partir de 1881, puis grand rabbin de Lemberg à partir de 1891. Il publia notamment une Geschichte der Juden in Lemberg bis zur Theilung Polens, à Cracovie, en 1894.
