Born in Livorno in 1877 in a Jewish family, he was a lecturer in Sanskrit and later taught paleography at the University of Bologna. He devoted himself especially to the study of Hebrew texts, printed and manuscript, cataloged the Hebrew manuscripts of the library of Talmud Torà in Livorno and those of the Ambrosiana in Milan. As a Jew, he was dismissed from teaching in the middle of the academic year 1938-39 by fascist racial laws. A street in Livorno bears his name.
