Talmudiste néerlandais et important homme d'œuvre communautaire, né à Amsterdam en 1808 et mort dans cette ville en 1890. Formé dès son jeune âge au bet ha-midrash 'Eẓ Ḥayyim et auprès du rabbin Berenstein à La Haye, il reçut en 1839 son diplôme de « Morenou » et fut, la même année, nommé membre du tribunal rabbinique de la synagogue portugaise d'Amsterdam, puis en 1852 président de ce tribunal et prédicateur de la synagogue. Il dirigea pendant près d'un demi-siècle les classes intermédiaires de 'Eẓ Ḥayyim, fonda la Ḥebrah 'Abodat ha-Ḳodesh, et se retira de ses fonctions en 1888 après avoir été décoré par le roi des Pays-Bas de l'ordre du Lion.
