Historien allemand des mathématiques, né à Mannheim en 1829, dans une famille venue du Portugal via la Hollande. Il étudia à Heidelberg à partir de 1848 puis à Göttingen, obtint son doctorat à Heidelberg en 1851, et y devint privat-docent en 1853, professeur assistant en 1863 puis professeur honoraire en 1877. Son œuvre majeure, les Vorlesungen über Geschichte der Mathematik, parue en trois volumes de 1880 à 1898, retrace le développement des mathématiques jusqu'à l'époque de Lagrange.
