Mathématicien allemand, né à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1845. Il entra en 1862 à l'université de Zurich, puis étudia à Berlin jusqu'en 1867, où il obtint son doctorat ; admis comme privat-docent à l'université de Halle en 1869, il y devint professeur assistant en 1872 puis professeur titulaire quelques années plus tard. Il est le créateur de la théorie des ensembles et de la théorie des nombres transfinis, exposée notamment dans ses Grundlagen einer Allgemeinen Mannigfaltigkeitslehre, parus à Leipzig en 1883.
