Médecin et auteur médical allemand, né à Ratisbonne en 1807 et mort à Erlangen en 1850. Il étudia à Vienne puis à Wurtzbourg auprès de Schönlein, où il obtint son doctorat en 1831, avant de se rendre à Paris pour étudier le choléra asiatique. Il exerça ensuite à Bruxelles jusqu'en 1838, puis fut appelé en 1843 à la chaire de pathologie de l'université d'Erlangen, où il fonda en 1841 le Jahresbericht über die Fortschritte der Gesammten Medicin, poursuivi après sa mort par le professeur Virchow.
