Isidore Cahen est un érudit et journaliste français né à Paris en 1826 et mort dans cette ville le 6 mars 1902. Diplômé du Collège Charlemagne, il entre à l'École normale en philosophie, où il compte parmi ses condisciples Edmond About et Hippolyte Taine; troisième au concours de sortie en 1849, il obtient l'agrégation de philosophie, mais perd son poste au lycée Napoléon-Vendée à la suite d'une cabale cléricale. Il se consacre alors au journalisme, collaborant au « Journal des débats » puis au « Temps »; à la mort de son père Samuel Cahen, il prend la direction des « Archives israélites » jusqu'à sa mort, tout en enseignant de 1859 à 1878 au Séminaire israélite de Paris.
