Abraham Cahan est un romancier et dirigeant syndical russo-américain né à Podberejie, gouvernement de Wilna, le 7 juillet 1860. Sa famille orthodoxe s'installe à Wilna en 1866; attiré par le savoir profane, il étudie clandestinement le russe, entre à l'Institut des instituteurs de Wilna, dont il sort diplômé en 1881, puis, contraint de fuir la Russie après une perquisition liée à ses activités révolutionnaires, arrive à New York en juin 1882. Pionnier du mouvement socialiste yiddish new-yorkais, il publie en 1895 sa première nouvelle puis, en 1896, son premier roman, « Yekl », qui attire l'attention de la critique des deux côtés de l'Atlantique.
