Lämmlein Buttenwieser est un talmudiste et linguiste allemand né à Wassertrüdingen, en Bavière, le 16 janvier 1825, et mort à New York le 23 septembre 1901, issu d'une famille de rabbins allemands. Formé au gymnase d'Aschaffenburg puis aux universités de Wurtzbourg et Prague, il obtient son diplôme rabbinique de plusieurs maîtres; il émigre en Amérique en 1854 et, peu séduit par le ministère rabbinique, devient professeur de langues, enseignant à Cincinnati puis, en 1867, à Philadelphie. Installé comme précepteur privé à New York en 1873, il y est nommé la même année professeur de langues dans les écoles publiques, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'à sa démission en 1886.
