Max Büdinger est un historien autrichien né le 1er avril 1828 à Cassel, en Allemagne, et mort à Vienne le 23 février 1902. Il étudie l'histoire à Marburg, Bonn et Berlin de 1847 à 1851, devient privat-docent à Marburg en 1857 mais, sans perspective de chaire en raison de sa confession juive, part pour Vienne, puis est appelé en 1861 à l'université de Zurich comme professeur d'histoire; de 1872 jusqu'à sa mort, il occupe la chaire d'histoire de l'université de Vienne, et entre en 1887 à l'Académie des sciences de Vienne. Auteur de nombreux ouvrages, dont « Oesterreichische Geschichte bis zum Ausgang des 13. Jahrhunderts » (Leipzig, 1858), il se convertit au protestantisme.
