Romancier (« What Makes Sammy Run? », 1941, sur l'ascension d'un jeune juif du Lower East Side ; « The Harder They Fall », 1947) et scénariste, il reçut l'Oscar du meilleur scénario pour « On the Waterfront » (Sur les quais, 1954).
