Alexander Büchler naît à Fülek, en Hongrie, en 1869, fils du rabbin talmudiste Phinehas Büchler de Moór. Formé au gymnase de Székesfehérvár puis à l'université et au séminaire de Budapest, il obtient son doctorat en 1893, est ordonné rabbin en 1895 et appelé à Keszthely en 1897. Ses travaux portent sur l'histoire des Juifs de Hongrie, publiés dans le « Magyar Zsidó Szemle » et l'« Oesterreichische Wochenschrift », ainsi que dans des ouvrages hongrois et hébreux, dont « Niederlassungen der Juden in Europa im XVI. und XVII. Jahrhundert » (Budapest, 1893) et une « Histoire des Juifs de Budapest » (1901).
