Né Bruno Schlesinger à Berlin en 1876, il adopte le nom de scène « Walter » sur le conseil de collègues (Mahler l'aida à le choisir). Proche de Gustav Mahler, il dirige les créations de la Neuvième Symphonie et de Das Lied von der Erde. Il émigre après 1933 et meurt en Californie en 1962. Outre sa carrière de chef, il a publié plusieurs livres sur la musique et une autobiographie.
