Born Bruno Schlesinger in Berlin in 1876, he adopted the stage name « Walter » on the advice of colleagues (Mahler helped him choose it). Close to Gustav Mahler, he conducted the premieres of the Ninth Symphony and Das Lied von der Erde. He emigrated after 1933 and died in California in 1962. Besides his career as a conductor, he published several books on music and an autobiography.
