Hugh Broughton est un théologien chrétien anglais et érudit rabbinique né en 1549 à Oldbury, dans le Shropshire, et mort à Tottenham, près de Londres, le 4 août 1612. Formé à l'hébreu au Magdalene College de Cambridge, il obtient son baccalauréat en 1570 et se distingue à Londres comme prédicateur puritain; son premier ouvrage, « A Concent of Scripture » (1588), s'efforce d'établir la chronologie biblique. Désireux de convertir les Juifs, il voyage vers 1590 en Allemagne, où il dispute à Francfort avec un « rabbi Elias »; déçu de ne pas figurer parmi les traducteurs nommés le 22 juillet 1604 pour la version autorisée du roi Jacques, il en critiqua vivement le résultat.
