Joseph Brill, dit « Ayov », est un instituteur et écrivain hébraïsant russe né à Gorki, près de Moguilev, sur le Dniepr, en 1839. Formé aux yeshivot de Chklov et Vitebsk, il s'installe à Minsk, où il ouvre une école pour garçons juifs et demeure actif comme enseignant et écrivain, publiant très tôt dans « Ha-Maggid », « Ha-Meliz » et « Ha-Karmel » des articles au style hébraïque remarquable et à l'humour fin. Il publie notamment une traduction du drame de Richard Cumberland, « Ich Yehoudi » (Wilna, 1884), des textes satiriques dans « Otsar ha-Sifrout » (Cracovie, 1890 et 1892), et des caricatures d'écrivains hébreux contemporains dans « Ha-Chahar » (Vienne, 1879).
