Ludwig Brieger est un médecin et écrivain médical allemand né à Glatz, en Silésie prussienne, le 26 juillet 1849. Diplômé en médecine de l'université de Strasbourg en 1875, il exerce à Berlin à partir de 1878, où il devient privat-docent en 1881, professeur titulaire en 1887, ouvre un dispensaire privé en 1890 et devient médecin-chef de l'hôpital universitaire pour maladies contagieuses en 1891, puis titulaire de la chaire de pathologie en 1897. Auteur reconnu de nombreux essais de pharmacologie et de bactériologie, il signe notamment un ouvrage en trois volumes sur les ptomaïnes (Berlin, 1885-86), démontrant que les bactéries développent leur nocivité par un produit toxique spécifique.
