Harry Bresslau est un historien allemand né à Dannenberg, en Hanovre, le 22 mars 1848. Il étudie l'histoire à Göttingen de 1866 à 1869, enseigne à Berlin comme privat-docent, devient professeur assistant en 1877, puis, en 1890, professeur à l'université de Strasbourg; membre correspondant de l'Académie de Munich en 1887, il entre en 1888 au comité de rédaction des « Monumenta Germaniae Historica ». Il a notamment établi que le récit selon lequel Charlemagne aurait fait venir le rabbin Kalonymus de Lucques comme grand-rabbin de tous les Juifs était une fabrication, et que la charte accordée par Henri IV aux Juifs de Spire était apocryphe.
