Max Breslauer est un chimiste allemand né à Trebnitz, en Silésie prussienne, le 19 juin 1856, diplômé en philosophie des universités de Leipzig, Heidelberg et Breslau. Nommé en 1880 chimiste judiciaire et de police à Lissa, en Prusse, puis en 1882 chef du bureau expérimental du conseil de santé de Brandebourg-sur-la-Havel, il est appelé quatre ans plus tard à Berlin pour la même fonction. Auteur de nombreux essais dans les revues professionnelles allemandes, il publie notamment des méthodes d'analyse de l'eau potable (1884), de l'air (1885), du lait (1886) et du lait maternel (1892).
