Hermann Breslauer est un neuropathe autrichien né à Duschnik, en Bohême, le 10 novembre 1835. Formé au gymnase de Pilsen puis à l'université de Vienne, il y obtient son doctorat en médecine en 1860 et s'y établit comme médecin la même année; assistant du professeur Leidersdorf de 1861 à 1872, il fonde alors, avec le docteur Fries, un hôpital privé pour maladies mentales et nerveuses à Inzersdorf, près de Vienne.
