Solomon Braun est un lieutenant d'artillerie français né à Paris en 1868 et mort à Togbao, au Soudan, en 1899. Fils d'un colporteur pauvre qui, remarquant ses dons, fit de grands sacrifices pour lui offrir une bonne éducation, il réussit le concours de l'École polytechnique, dont il sort lieutenant d'artillerie; en 1897, il obtient du ministre de la Guerre la permission de rejoindre la périlleuse expédition d'exploration du lac Tchad conduite par le commandant Bretonnet, expédition surprise par les Touaregs et entièrement massacrée.
