Josef Braun est un journaliste, dramaturge et librettiste autrichien né à Budapest le 5 mai 1840. Il abandonne en 1860 des études de médecine à Vienne pour le journalisme, collabore à plusieurs journaux viennois puis fonde, en 1871, la revue satirique « Bombe », qu'il revend en 1881 pour créer les « Wiener Caricaturen »; il écrivit de nombreux livrets d'opérette, dont « Flotte Bursche » (1861, musique de Suppé), « Die Keusche Diana » (1864, premier opéra de Millöcker) et « Carneval in Rom » (1877, musique de Johann Strauss).
