Mordecai David Brandstädter est un romancier galicien né le 14 février 1844 à Brzesko, marié à quatorze ans et installé chez ses beaux-parents à Tarnów, où il s'établit dans les affaires à vingt ans. Sa véritable carrière littéraire commence en 1869, lors d'un séjour à Vienne où il rencontre Peretz Smolenskin, qui l'encourage à écrire des nouvelles pour son mensuel « Ha-Shaḥar »; parmi ses récits les plus connus, décrivant la vie des Juifs de Galicie avec humour et sens critique, figurent « Mordecai Kisovitz » et « Reshit Madon », réunis avec d'autres dans ses « Ḳol Sippouré » en deux volumes (Cracovie, 1890-91).
