Simon Brainin est un médecin russe né à Riga, en Livonie, le 15 juillet 1854, formé aux universités de Dorpat et de Berlin, médecin de la communauté juive de Riga et l'un des dirigeants de son kahal, le dernier kahal indépendant de Russie, jusqu'à son abolition. Membre en 1885 de la commission gouvernementale chargée d'examiner les droits des Juifs de Riga, délégué en 1892 à la conférence rabbinique de Saint-Pétersbourg, il émigre en 1895 à New York, où il exerce toujours la médecine; il est l'auteur d'« Oraḥ la-Ḥayyim », ouvrage de médecine populaire en hébreu (Wilna, 1883), et d'un guide médical publié à Riga en 1885.
