Karl Ludwig Börne, né Loeb Baruch, est un écrivain politique et littéraire allemand né le 6 mai 1786 à Francfort-sur-le-Main et mort à Paris le 12 février 1837. Envoyé étudier la médecine chez le docteur Marcus Herz à Berlin dès l'adolescence, il tombe amoureux de la femme de celui-ci, Henriette Herz, avant de poursuivre ses études à Halle puis à Heidelberg, se tournant vers le droit et l'administration; il obtient son doctorat en philosophie à Giessen le 8 août 1809 et occupe à partir de 1811 un poste au bureau de police de sa ville natale. Sa correspondance avec Henriette Herz fut publiée en 1861 sous le titre « Briefe des Jungen Börne an Henriette Herz ».
