Poète soviétique né à Sloviansk dans une famille juive, vétéran de la Grande Guerre patriotique. Seul poète russe à faire de la Shoah un thème central de son œuvre ; il aborde l'antisémitisme et la tradition juive, et traduisit la poésie yiddish en russe. Son premier recueil, Pamiat' (Mémoire, 1957), assit d'emblée sa réputation.
