Soviet poet born in Sloviansk into a Jewish family, veteran of the Great Patriotic War. The only Russian poet to make the Shoah a central theme of his work; he addressed antisemitism and Jewish tradition, and translated Yiddish poetry into Russian. His first collection, Pamiat' (Memory, 1957), established his reputation immediately.
