Sculpteur juif lituanien, sculpteur de cour du prince Ferdinand de Bulgarie où il fonde l'Académie royale des arts. Sioniste après sa rencontre avec Herzl, il fonde en 1906 à Jérusalem l'école d'art Bezalel, dont il est considéré comme le père de l'art israélien. Il publia aussi des textes littéraires, dont un roman utopique.
