Journaliste juif russe, rédacteur en chef du journal Retch (« La Parole ») du parti constitutionnel-démocrate (KD). Expulsé d'URSS en 1922 par décret de Lénine avec quelque deux cents intellectuels opposés au régime, il gagne Berlin puis, en 1923, Riga (Lettonie). Après le rattachement de la Lettonie à l'URSS (1940), il est condamné à sept ans de camp et meurt au Goulag le 30 août 1941. Père du physicien Iouli Khariton.
