Russian Jewish journalist, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Retch (« The Word ») of the constitutional-democratic party (KD). Expelled from the USSR in 1922 by Lenin's decree along with about two hundred intellectuals opposed to the regime, he went to Berlin and then, in 1923, to Riga (Latvia). After Latvia's annexation to the USSR (1940), he was sentenced to seven years in the camp and died in the Gulag on August 30, 1941. Father of physicist Iouli Khariton.
