Peintre allemand ; né à Berlin le 7 mars 1857 ; a étudié à l'Académie de Berlin et auprès de Max Michael ; a voyagé extensivement en Italie, en France, en Hollande et en Espagne, restant cinq ans en Espagne. Il est actuellement (1902) résident de Dresde en Saxe.

Borchardt a remporté un grand succès dans la peinture de portrait et dans la représentation de scènes de la nature. Son œuvre la plus connue est « Die These », un tableau de dimensions colossales qui représente plusieurs moines napolitains engagés dans une controverse théologique.
